We’re a pretty switched on bunch here at Web Boutique, and when were not busy designing websites, and helping you engage your customers we like to spill our thoughts.

We will often share general web tips and social activities to try out with your website, or it may just be something we think is pretty cool that ought to be shared.

Duplico Media

Duplico Media? Web Boutique? I’m confused! You shouldn’t be. All we did was rebrand our web services under the new umbrella that is Web Boutique. We changed our focus and drive, but you still get the same great service that you previously got with Duplico Media.

You can set this to any image you want. The cover image sizes are: Width: 850px Height: 315px Have fun customising your new page!

New Facebook Pages. The Good and The Bad!

As most of you will be familiar with, Facebook’s overhaul of the timeline layout for personal pages was done in October last year, and while there will always be haters, it was received quite positively. Check out our write up on personal Facebook timeline features here. This morning Facebook launch the timeline for places & pages. So what does this mean? The Good Pages now have a big chunk of screen real estate at the top of their page in the form of the cover image. Brady Dyer Photography, our first client to make the switch (it’s optional till 31 March) has used this space to showcase the latest portfolio … read the rest

Building a whole website on the way to Australia

Last year for Christmas I was fortunate to visit Brisbane to see friends & family there. As is always the case with lengthy trips, there is list of jobs ‘to do’ before you even pack your bags. One of the things on this list was to build a website for BodySync, a personal trainer in Wellington, from scratch. Time always seems to speed up, and with the list getting longer it was never done before I left. But then I realised all I needed was a couple of hours unplugged from the internet, my MacBook Pro, and MAMP (a program for Mac’s that lets you run a local server and … read the rest

This is what it would look like.

Fooquake rocks Auckland

We love cool data as much as the next geek. So when Craig Miller and the Wairakei GeoNet crew posted up some interesting seismic graphs relating to the Foo Fighters concert, we thought we ‘ought to get in on that! The Herne Bay (HBAZ) and Eden Park (EPAZ) stations are 1.5km and 2km from Western Springs, respectively, and recorded a strong low frequency signal during the Foo Fighters concert. There were highs and lows through-out the night, most likely showing the absolute crowd pleasers, and those that only the die-hard loyal fans knew. We’re pleased to say that the Web Boutique crew made up some of the 100,000 ground-stomping feet … read the rest

Expiring nz Domains

What happens to domains once someone decides they no longer want them? They go back into the ‘pool’ for people to purchase. Seems simple? Not quite… There is a small period of time when the domain is due to expire, till it goes back in the pool, when web agencies bid against each other to pick them up. We browse through the list daily for our existing customers (and new customers too), always on the lookout for some great buys! Today we secured VHStoDVD.co.nz for our client Duplico Media who specialist in converting VHS to DVD. We’ve also recently secured JETT.co.nz for Jetts Gym (www.jetts.co.nz) and typo.co.nz for the retail … read the rest

HELP! My domain is taken.

So your .co.nz or .com is taken? Should you try a .net? No. A simple question. A simple answer. But wait hold on? Ok ok ok… So you’ve discovered that your perfect domain has already been snapped up by someone else and you’re thinking about other prefixes? We really don’t recommend using .net’s purely for the fact that internet users are stupid. They can’t be trusted, and their minds skip the end of domain names, and they will end up on someone elses website. The same way that you might dial an 0800 number when really you wanted the 0508 number. We get around 5 calls a week, from people … read the rest
